Challenging Heterosexism

In the Challenging Heterosexism workshop, VISIONS uses a multi-media experiential format to explore the phenomenon of heterosexism. This workshop is not about sexual practices or changing religious beliefs. The main goal is to raise participants' awareness of their attitudes and biases with regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people.

Key topics of the challenging heterosexism workshop include:

  • what is heterosexism;
  • the interconnection of heterosexism with the other "isms" (e.g., sexism, racism, classism, anti-semitism, ageism);
  • understanding the impact of a "don't ask; don't tell" policy;
  • myths and stereotypes about sexual orientation; and
  • challenges that face lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people as a result of heterosexism.

Agencies or groups can use this workshop to generate new strategies for supervisory relationships, supporting an "out" colleague, and learning about what is happening in other corporate settings.
