Healthcare

In the Health Services Field, VISIONS, Inc. offers multicultural consultation and training for individual practitioners such as:

  • physicians and surgeons,
  • nurses,
  • nutritionists,
  • social service providers,
  • technicians in hospitals and clinics;

as well as

  • medical schools,
  • hospital departments,
  • clinics,
  • community health centers.

In hospitals and clinic settings, diversity is very important to patient care, staff development, manager-staff effectiveness, and physician involvement.
Multiculturalism (learning the process of recognizing, understanding and appreciating differences) is a perspective for understanding the personal costs and benefits of prejudice and bias.

Our clients have used consultation and training to generate new strategies for:

  • increasing recruitment, retention and promotion of African-American,
    Latino/a, Asian, and Native American medical and administrative staff in
    hospitals and clinics;
  • increasing problem-solving skills and effective complaint management involving racial, gender, and other differences among staff and patients;
  • improving staff skills and morale through development and training to create and maintain a multicultural environment which builds and enhances self-esteem, and which increases accountability and feedback skills;
  • increasing client satisfaction by using a patient-centered approach to health care and applying multicultural principles;
  • increasing physicians' understanding of patient motivation for medical,
    dietary, and lifestyle regimens, and compliance;
  • improving communication skills in such areas as telephone protocol, handling difficult people, assertiveness, and community relations;
  • maximizing patient satisfaction through an understanding of the cultural dynamics of patient evaluation and advocacy; and
  • improving the longevity and quality of life in historically targeted groups by using community education strategies to increase understanding of the positive
    social and health impacts of equal access to appropriate care.
